Don't Just Chase Tariffs: The EU FTA Needs a Strategy Overhaul

By The Daily Ledger Editorial Desk · 10/23/2026

FICCI is warning Indian companies that an FTA with the EU isn't a silver bullet for growth. To succeed, businesses must move beyond price wars, focus on rigorous quality standards, and integrate into larger supply chains. The real opportunity lies in compliance and strategic partnerships rather than relying solely on tariff concessions to compete in the demanding European market.

I have seen this movie before. Every time an FTA announcement drops, the celebratory press releases fly. FICCI is now nudging Indian firms to stop treating the upcoming India-EU trade pact as a magic wand. They are right to do so. The reality is that lower tariffs won’t matter if your product doesn’t survive the rigorous scrutiny of a European buyer.

Let’s be honest: Europe isn't just another market; it's a regulatory fortress. Between ESG mandates, carbon taxes, and stringent quality standards, simply being 'cheap' isn't enough anymore. You aren't competing with the neighbor next door; you are competing with global players who have optimized their supply chains for decades. If you view this deal purely as a way to undercut prices, you are walking into a trap.

The real play here isn't just direct exports. FICCI’s point about MSMEs plugging into larger supply chains is the smartest part of their advice. For a small Indian component maker, trying to navigate German customs alone is a nightmare. But becoming a reliable tier-two supplier to a larger Indian firm that is already exporting to the EU? That is how you scale. It’s about piggybacking on established infrastructure rather than trying to build a plane while flying it.

What happens next? The companies that thrive will be those that invest in certification and compliance today. Europe loves quality, but they love consistency more. If you can prove your manufacturing process is clean and your supply chain is resilient, you aren't just an exporter; you become a strategic partner. That is where the margins actually live. The tariff break is just the cherry on top, not the cake.

Founders, ask yourselves: are you building for a domestic market that is price-sensitive, or are you building a product that holds up in a market that prioritizes sustainability and precision? If it’s the former, no trade deal in the world will save your P&L sheet. We need to stop obsessing over the government's policy papers and start obsessing over our manufacturing quality.

Trade deals are the door, but you still have to walk through it yourself. If you are already exporting to the West, what was your biggest 'Aha!' moment when dealing with European buyers? I’d love to hear if the red tape was worth the trade-off. Shoot me a reply.
